Thousands of Iranians took to the streets on Thursday to bid farewell to their late president Ebrahim Raisi and attend his funeral rites who was confirmed dead on Monday.

Thousands of people, holding placards of Raisi and waving flags, marched in the eastern city of Birjand on Thursday morning to bid the president farewell — a day after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led his funeral prayers in Tehran.

The late president will be buried at the holy shrine of Imam Reza, a renowned mausoleum in the northeastern city of Mashhad today, reported Reuters.

President Raisi, 63, was travelling with his Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and other high officials when their helicopter crashed in the country’s mountainous northwest while returning from a dam inauguration.

Those accompanying the Iranian president included Supreme Leader Khamenei’s representative Ali Ale-Hashem, East Azerbaijan Governor Malek Rahmati, two bodyguards, two pilots and one crew member.

All passengers, including Raisi, were declared dead when charred wreckage of the Bell 212 helicopter was found early on Monday after an overnight search in blizzard conditions.

Tehran has launched an investigation into the helicopter crash with Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri constituting a probe committee headed by Brigadier Ali Abdollahi.

It was reported that the findings of the incident’s investigation would be made public.

Large photos of Raisi and black flags have been erected throughout the streets of Iran’s second city, particularly around the Imam Reza shrine.

Meanwhile, FM Abdollahian will be buried at the shrine of Shah Abdol-Azim in the town of Shahr-Rey south of the capital today.

Mohammad Mokhber appointed Iran’s interim president – SUCH TV

Following the tragic death of Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi and his entourage in a helicopter crash in northwestern Iran, the first vice president has taken charge as the interim president.

Iranian Constitution states that the first vice president takes over temporarily in the event of the death or major illness of the incumbent president for a period of 50 days.

Mohammad Mokhber, who served as President Raeisi’s first deputy since 2021, has taken over as the acting president for 50 days, in line with the constitutional requirement.

Holding a PhD in international law, Mokhber was born in the city of Dezful in the southern province of Khuzestan in 1955. He rose through the ranks to assume important social and political roles.

Mokhber, a vastly experienced executive manager who was chosen by Raeisi as his first vice president following the historic presidential elections in 2021, has impressed all and sundry with his work.

Mokhber served as the head of Setad for nearly 14 years between 2007 and 2021. During this long period, his passion for social welfare, hard work and commitment to the revolutionary cause was something that made him a popular figure.

Among his works in Setad included the establishment of the Barakat Foundation, the Ehsan Foundation, and the production of the first Iranian COVID-19 vaccine, known as CONIRAN BAREKAT.

Before Setad, he served as the chairman of the board at Sina Bank, as well as the governor of southern Iran’s Khuzestan province.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and the country’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian have died in a helicopter crash.

The development has been confirmed on Monday by Vice President Mohsen Mansouri in a statement on social media and on state television.

“Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, East Azarbaijan Province’s Governor Malek Rahmati, and Mehdi Mousavi, the head of Raisi’s guard team were on board the crashed aircraft as well,” the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) earlier said.

It added that Mohammad Ali Al-e-Hashem, the Supreme Leader’s representative in the East Azerbaijan province, also accompanied the 63-year-old President Raisi and other officials.

Iran’s Mehr news agency also confirmed that “all passengers of the helicopter” were “martyred”.

The chopper that carried President Raisi and Iran’s foreign minister crashed on Sunday while flying through a mountainous terrain amid heavy fog in the Varzaqan region of the country’s East Azerbaijan province.

According to Iranian state media, bad weather caused the crash and complicated rescue efforts in the country’s northwestern region. Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) said Raisi was flying in a US-made Bell 212 helicopter.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have expressed deep grief and sorrow over the tragic death of Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, in a helicopter crash.

In their separate statements, the President and the Prime Minister extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the Iranian President, the Foreign Minister, and others who lost their lives in the accident.

President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to President Raisi’s dedicated services to the Muslim Ummah, highlighting his steadfast advocacy for the unity of Muslim Ummah.

He emphasized that the Islamic World has lost a remarkable leader who always supported Muslim cause and deeply felt the sufferings of the Muslims globally, particularly the Palestinian and Kashmiri people.

He said Pakistan mourns the loss of a great friend. Recalling his recent visit to Pakistan, he said the Iranian President always had a special place for Pakistan and its people.

President Zardari described Raisi’s passing as a great loss not only for Iran but for the entire Muslim Ummah.

He said President Raisi will be dearly missed and fondly remembered in Iran, Pakistan, and the Islamic World for his efforts to enhance relations with regional and Islamic countries.

In a post on his X handle, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said both the Iranian President and the Foreign Minister were good friends of Pakistan.

He said Pakistan will observe a day of mourning and the flag will fly at half-mast as a mark of respect for President Raisi and his companions and in solidarity with the Iranian people.

Shehbaz Sharif said the great Iranian nation will overcome this tragedy with customary courage.
