At the 2024 Paris Olympics, the stands are teeming with spectators, a stark contrast to the last summer games, where fans weren’t allowed due to Covid restrictions. For Olympians like Jessica Parratto, that means her family can cheer her on in person after watching her win a silver medal in synchronized diving in Tokyo from home.

In a defining moment from the Tokyo Olympics, Simone Biles pulled out of the competition after a scary run-in with what gymnasts call the “twisties.” Since then, she’s prioritized her mental health and now goes to therapy every week. Biles tells NBC News’ Hoda Kotb that three years later, she’s looking for redemption in Paris.

A dominating race in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay secured Team USA its first gold medal of the Paris Olympics. Katie Ledecky also won her first medal of the games. It was a wet start for athletes outside the pool too, with downpours drenching the beach volleyball and cycling tournaments, and raising questions about the cleanliness of the Seine for future competitions. NBC News’ Stephanie Gosk reports.
