Rohit Sharma moves closer to Babar Azam's No 1…

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has reached to second place in the ICC ODI rankings and is moving closer to Pakistan’s white-ball captain, Babar Azam.

Babar faces fresh competition from Rohit and Sri Lankan right-hander Pathum Nissanka even though he maintains a strong lead at the top of the list for ODI batters.

After scoring a series-best 157 runs against Sri Lanka, Rohit surpassed his teammate Shubman Gill, while Nissanka also moved up to eighth place following his 101 runs in the same series.

Sri Lanka ended a 27-year drought by defeating India for the first time since 1997 during that ODI series. Kusal Mendis (up five places to joint 39th) and Avishka Fernando (up 20 places to 68th) also made gains on the latest list for 50-over batsmen.

Hard-hitting Netherlands opener Max O’Dowd (up 10 places to 54th) and US’s Monank Patel (up 11 places to joint 56th) also advanced on this list, while US’s Nosthush Kenjige (up 10 places to 49th) and Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage (up 17 places to 59th) were among the notable movers in the ODI rankings for bowlers.

There was also some movement in the latest Test player rankings, following the draw between the West Indies and South Africa in Trinidad.

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has achieved a new career-high rating, moving up two places to 16th on the Test batters’ list after scores of 86 and 15* against the West Indies. Meanwhile, opener Tony de Zorzi has climbed 29 places to 85th following an impressive 78 in the first innings of the ICC World Test Championship match.

From a West Indies perspective, Jason Holder (up three spots to 67th) and Alick Athanaze (up 12 places to 76th) were notable movers among the Test batters. South African spinner Keshav Maharaj was the standout performer on the latest list for Test bowlers.

Maharaj took four wickets in each innings, earning Player of the Match honours and climbing seven places to joint 21st as a result.

Spinner Jomel Warrican climbed 12 spots to 54th and achieved a new career-best rating following his six wickets in the match.

Sri Lanka outclass India in ODI series for first…

For the first time since 1997, Sri Lanka won the ODI series over India as they defeated Rohit Sharma and Co by 110 runs in the third ODI on Wednesday in Colombo.

The three-match ODI series was won by the hosts by 2-0, having tied the first game and defeating India by 32 runs in the second ODI.

Rival India’s batting line-up collapsed as they were bowled out for 138 in 26.1 overs while chasing a target of 249.

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, was the highest run-scorer for the visitors, contributing 35 off 20 balls to the total.

Veteran batter Virat Kohli also failed to stay at the crease and was dismissed after scoring 20 runs off 18 balls.

Sharma’s dismissal followed by Kohli’s wicket triggered a collapse in the middle order as Rishabh Pant (6), Shreyas Iyer (8), and Axar Patel (2) succumbed to Sri Lanka’s spin attack.

Washington Sundar made 30 off 25 balls before his dismissal, leaving India at 138 for nine in 26 overs.

Kuldeep Yadav was dismissed on the very next ball, the first of the 27th over, as Sri Lanka secured a historic ODI series win against India.

For Sri Lanka, Dunith Wellalage claimed a five-for, while Jeffrey Vandersay took two wickets.

Batting first, the hosts posted a total of 248 for seven in their 50 overs after their opening pair provided a strong start.

Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando gave Sri Lanka a start of 89 in 19.4 overs before the former was dismissed after scoring 45 off 65 balls.

His batting partner Fernando fell just four runs short of a well-deserved century, departing after scoring 95 off 102 deliveries.

Kusal Mendis then took charge of the innings, contributing 59 runs to the total, while Kamindu Mendis added 23 runs in the latter part of the innings to help Sri Lanka post a competitive score.

Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, has been acknowledged for his outstanding recent performances with the bat, closing the gap on Pakistan’s Babar Azam at the top of the ICC Men’s ODI Batter Rankings.

Sharma tops the run-scoring charts in the first two matches of India’s three-match series against Sri Lanka, scoring two half-centuries and accumulating 122 runs at a striking rate of 134.06.

The 37-year-old hit a swift 64 in the second game of the series in Colombo, elevating his ODI batter ranking to third place with 763 rating points, just 61 points behind Babar Azam.

Shubman Gill remains in second place despite scoring only 51 runs in the first two matches against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Axar Patel’s 77 runs in the series have propelled him up 35 places to 178th in the ODI batter rankings.

From the Sri Lankan camp, Janith Liyanage has climbed 10 spots to 76th, and opener Avishka Fernando has moved up nine places to 88th in the rankings.

The latest update also saw significant movements in the ODI bowler rankings. India’s spinner Kuldeep Yadav advanced five places to fourth after taking three wickets in two matches against Sri Lanka, including figures of 2/33 in the second match.

Sri Lanka’s young spinner Dunith Wellalage rose five spots to 76th, and Axar Patel improved 37 places to 96th with his 1/36 in the second match.

Additionally, India all-rounder Washington Sundar and Sri Lanka spinner Jeffrey Vandersay made considerable gains.

Sundar jumped 45 places to 97th after his three-wicket haul in the second match, while Vandersay soared 64 spots to 105th following his impressive six-wicket performance in the same game.
