The Paris Olympics have produced numerous memorable moments, but none have captured the public’s imagination quite like a photo of Gabriel Medina’s mid-air celebration during the surfing event in Tahiti.

Photographer Jerome Brouillet, working for Agence France-Presse, captured the Brazilian surfer in a striking pose as he performed a celebratory gesture after a record-setting ride.

The image shows Medina and his board appearing to levitate above the waves, with Medina’s raised index finger signalling his triumph.

The 30-year-old Medina, a three-time World Surf League champion, secured a near-perfect score of 9.90, setting a new Olympic record for a single wave run.

His triumphant kick-out from the wave, anticipated by Brouillet, added to the photo’s dramatic impact.

Brouillet, who has been photographing surfing for nearly a decade, expressed his surprise at the photo’s viral success.

“I never thought it was possible that this shot would be so much appreciated, but I can understand why,” he said.

The photo quickly gained traction online, amassing countless reshares and praise. Medina’s outstanding performance propelled him to a total score of 17.40, moving him into the quarterfinals against compatriot Joao Chianca.

Medina’s impressive ride came during optimal conditions at Teahupo’o, with waves described as “serious” before weather conditions forced a postponement of the women’s competition.
